Where is Amsterdam North?

Amsterdam North, as the name suggests, can be found in the Northern part of the city. It is located across the river IJ, and can be accessed by ferry or bus from Amsterdam Central Station. The top picture is taken from the other side of the IJ. We also wrote a guide on where to sleep in Amsterdam Noord.

A brief history of Amsterdam North

Amsterdam North started its life as an area characterised by muddy, uninhabited swampland. The neighbourhood is not more than a century old, and so considerably younger  than the rest of the city. This is because up until 1870 a large part of the area had to still be reclaimed from the Ij river, and turned into habitable land. Up until 1795, it was home to the gallows of the city of Amsterdam. Here, the dead bodies of executed convicts would be put on display after death as a deterrent to all those that passed by boat down the Ij river.

The area saw rapid growth at the end of the 19th century, due mainly to the expansion of the North Sea Canal. This canal meant that the ports of Amsterdam were now accessible by steamboat, opening the city up to trade. This lead to the North becoming the industrial hub of the city, which gradually led to an increase in worker populations and housing in the area. Many of the old reclaimed industrial buildings can still be visited and enjoyed today!
