This list of Amsterdam highlights is curated by many locals living in and around Amsterdam. Myself as the main autor visit the city daily for work plus I have studied there for 5 years. #1 The Rijksmuseum
The Rijksmuseum is a treasure trove of Dutch art and history, home to masterpieces by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Van Gogh. Its most famous piece, The Night Watch, draws thousands of visitors daily, but the museum’s collection spans over 800 years of Dutch culture. The grand 19th-century building itself is a masterpiece, and its beautifully landscaped gardens offer a serene escape in the heart of the city. I have visited this museum over 20 times and am still discovering new things. Be sure to buy your tickets online to reserve an entry time as it’s always busy here.

One of Amsterdam’s most moving experiences, the Anne Frank House tells the harrowing story of Anne Frank and her family, who hid in a secret annex during World War II. Walking through the cramped rooms and seeing Anne’s original diary is a profoundly emotional experience that brings history to life. #4 The Van Gogh Museum

Dedicated to one of the most beloved artists of all time, the Van Gogh Museum houses the world’s largest collection of his works. From The Sunflowers to The Bedroom, visitors can follow Van Gogh’s artistic journey and get a deeper understanding of his troubled yet brilliant mind. Once a working-class neighborhood, the Jordaan has transformed into one of Amsterdam’s trendiest areas, filled with boutique shops, cozy cafés, and art galleries. Strolling through its narrow streets, you’ll find hidden courtyards, vibrant street markets, and a bohemian atmosphere that makes it one of the most charming parts of the city.
#6 The Royal Palace of Amsterdam

Standing proudly on Dam Square, the Royal Palace is one of the city’s most impressive buildings. Originally built as a city hall in the 17th century, it later became a royal residence. Inside, visitors can admire lavish interiors, stunning chandeliers, and grand historical artworks that showcase the Netherlands’ Golden Age. We Dutchies call it Paleis op de Dam.
#7 The Heineken Experience

Beer lovers won’t want to miss the Heineken Experience, an interactive tour of the world-famous brewery. Located in the company’s original 19th-century brewery, this attraction offers a behind-the-scenes look at the brewing process, fun multimedia exhibits, and, of course, a chance to taste the iconic Dutch beer. Be sure to book online because last minute it will be sold out.

For those who love shopping, the Negen Straatjes is a dream destination. This picturesque area in the heart of the canal district is home to quirky boutiques, vintage stores, and stylish cafés. #9 The A’DAM Lookout
For breathtaking panoramic views of Amsterdam, head to the A’DAM Lookout. Located in Amsterdam Noord, this observation deck offers a stunning 360-degree view of the city skyline. If you’re feeling adventurous, try the Over the Edge swing, where you can dangle over the edge of the building at 100 meters above the ground.

Amsterdam’s most famous park is a green oasis in the heart of the city. #11 The Amsterdam Museum
The Amsterdam Museum’s main building is under renovation, and its temporary Amstel location closed in December 2025. For a visit now, check the museum’s current locations and exhibitions, including Amsterdam in Motion and the Willet-Holthuysen House.

One of Amsterdam’s most iconic churches, the Westerkerk is a stunning example of Dutch Renaissance architecture and holds a special place in the city’s history. Located next to the Anne Frank House, it’s famous for its 85-meter-high Westertoren, the tallest church tower in Amsterdam. Visitors can climb the tower for breathtaking panoramic views over the city, including the canals, the Jordaan district, and even as far as the port. The church itself, with its impressive organ and serene atmosphere, is well worth a visit.
#13 The Albert Cuyp Market
Amsterdam’s largest and most famous street market, the Albert Cuyp Market, has been around since 1905 and is a paradise for food lovers. From traditional Dutch stroopwafels and fresh herring to international delicacies, there’s something delicious for every palate. Besides food, you’ll also find clothing, accessories, and household items at bargain prices.
#14 The Begijnhof
Tucked away in the city center, the Begijnhof is a hidden courtyard offering a peaceful escape from Amsterdam’s busy streets. This historic complex dates back to the Middle Ages and was once home to a community of religious women known as the Beguines. The beautifully preserved houses, including the oldest wooden house in Amsterdam, make it a magical spot to explore.
#15 The Eye Filmmuseum
Film enthusiasts should not miss the Eye Filmmuseum, an architectural masterpiece located on the northern bank of the IJ River, in the infamous Amsterdam North.
