The city of Arnhem is full of hidden gems, historical sites, and green spaces. Here are the must-sees during your visit:
#1 Veluwe National Park & Kröller-Müller Museum
Just outside Arnhem lies one of the most breathtaking national parks in the Netherlands: De Hoge Veluwe. Rent a free white bike and explore its vast forests, sand dunes, and heathlands. The park is also home to the Kröller-Müller Museum, which boasts the second-largest Van Gogh collection in the world, along with works by Picasso, Mondriaan, and Rodin. Be sure to book your tickets online as it can be very busy and full = full.
#2 Openluchtmuseum (Dutch Open Air Museum)
Step back in time and discover Dutch history at the Openluchtmuseum. This outdoor museum features authentic historical buildings, windmills, and farmhouses from different parts of the Netherlands. You’ll meet actors in period costumes, see craftsmen at work, and learn about Dutch traditions in a fun and interactive way. Fun for young and old! Be sure to book your tickets online.
#3 Sonsbeek Park
If you ask a local about their favorite spot in Arnhem, Sonsbeek Park will probably be at the top of the list. This stunning park, located just a stone’s throw from the city center, is the perfect place for a relaxing walk, picnic, or even a small hike. The park has waterfalls, historic buildings, and fantastic views over Arnhem. If you’re lucky, you might spot a wedding taking place in the elegant Sonsbeek Pavilion.
#4 The John Frost Bridge

Arnhem played a crucial role in World War II, particularly during the Battle of Arnhem in 1944, which was part of Operation Market Garden. The John Frost Bridge, named after the British commander John Frost, is a key historical landmark and was the famous “Bridge Too Far.” A visit here, combined with a stop at the Airborne Museum Hartenstein, will give you a deep insight into this dramatic chapter of history.
#5 Fashion District (Modekwartier)
Arnhem is known for its thriving fashion scene, and the Modekwartier is the heart of it. This district is filled with independent designers, boutique stores, and creative workshops. Whether you’re looking for unique Dutch fashion or just want to soak up the artistic atmosphere, this is the place to be. Fun fact: the city is home to ArtEZ, one of the best fashion academies in the Netherlands!
#6 Airborne at the Bridge Museum
Airborne Museum Hartenstein is in Oosterbeek. Beside Arnhem’s John Frost Bridge, Airborne at the Bridge tells the story of the fighting around the bridge. Check the museum website for opening information before visiting.
#7 Burgers’ Zoo

Burgers’ Zoo is not just any zoo it’s one of the most innovative in Europe. Instead of traditional enclosures, it offers themed ecosystems where animals roam freely in their natural habitats. You can walk through the rainforest, experience the African savanna, or dive into the ocean at the largest living coral reef in a European zoo. It’s a fantastic day out for both kids and adults, you can even stay here for the night and enjoy the sounds of nature from dusk till dawn.
#8 Eusebius Church and Glass Elevator
The Eusebius Church is Arnhem’s most iconic church, offering a breathtaking 360-degree view over the city from its glass elevator. If you dare, step onto the glass balcony at 73 meters high definitely not for those afraid of heights! The church itself is steeped in history and survived heavy bombardments during World War II.
#9 Korenmarkt (Nightlife & Bars)
Arnhem’s Korenmarkt is the place to be for nightlife, with bars, pubs, and clubs lining the square. Whether you’re looking for a cozy café, a trendy cocktail bar, or a dance club, you’ll find something to match your vibe. For a true local experience, order a Schrobbelèr, a Dutch herbal liqueur that’s popular in this region.
#10 The Rijnkade
For a relaxed afternoon or evening, head to the Rijnkade, Arnhem’s lively waterfront area. Here, you’ll find terraces overlooking the Rhine River, offering a fantastic place to sip a Dutch beer while watching boats glide by. It’s also the best spot in the city for summer festivals and open-air concerts.
Best places to stay in Arnhem
Arnhem is one of my favorite cities in The Netherlands as it is so close to the beautiful Hoge Veluwe National Park and Kröller Muller museum. Therefore, it’s hard for me to pick the best places to stay as I have a ton of tips but if I could only pick one hotel to stay for the night it would be Boutiquehotel The Church. The location is perfect, but the facilities like the restaurant are of Michelin class! The hotel is also located inside a very old church, how cool is that. Another great spot is Walburgis Residenties or Hotel Molendal.
Food and local specialties
Arnhem has a fantastic food scene, from cozy Dutch cafés to high-end restaurants. Here are a few specialties you should try:
- Arnhemse Meisjes – Sweet, crunchy cookies sprinkled with sugar, a true local delicacy!
- Stamppot – A traditional Dutch dish of mashed potatoes mixed with vegetables and served with sausage. Perfect for cold days!
- Pannenkoeken – Dutch pancakes, either sweet or savory, are a must-try, especially at one of the charming pancake houses near Sonsbeek Park.
For great dining options, check out Goed.Proeven for modern Dutch cuisine or The Church for some haute cuisine (my own favorite place to eat and stay).
Events and festivals
Arnhem is home to many exciting festivals throughout the year.
- World Living Statues Festival (September) – One of the world’s biggest festivals for living statue performers!
- Arnhemse Stockdagen (June) – A fashion and design event where you can buy exclusive, handmade fashion items directly from designers.
- Free Your Mind Festival (June) – One of the biggest electronic music festivals in the Netherlands, held in a stunning outdoor location.
Living in Arnhem

Arnhem is an attractive city for expats due to its green surroundings, excellent transport connections, and relatively affordable housing. If my family wouldn’t live in the Randstad, I would probably move to Arnhem. The best areas to live in include:
- Burgemeesterswijk – A beautiful historic neighborhood near Sonsbeek Park.
- Spijkerkwartier – A vibrant, artistic area with lots of character.
- Schaarsbergen – Perfect for those who love nature and want to live near the Veluwe.
A bit of history
Arnhem’s history dates back to Roman times, but its most famous chapter is undoubtedly World War II. The Battle of Arnhem in 1944 was part of Operation Market Garden, a failed Allied attempt to secure bridges over the Rhine. This battle left the city heavily damaged, but Arnhem has since rebuilt itself into a thriving, modern city.
