Take the train, take your time

Netherlands itinerary: 3, 5 or 7 days

A few well-chosen stops work better than a week of checking in and out. Start with Amsterdam and Haarlem. With more time, add Rotterdam as a second base and explore the cities around it by train.

These itineraries allow full days for sightseeing and exclude flight days. Add overnight stays around your arrival or departure if needed. You can follow each route without a car, with time to enjoy each stop rather than trying to visit every region.

3-day Netherlands itinerary: Amsterdam and Haarlem

Stay in Amsterdam

Keep your luggage in one place. Spend two days in the capital and make Haarlem your third-day outing. If day one is mostly taken up by arrival, drop an activity instead of squeezing it into the evening.

Choose accommodation around your plans, not only the station. Our Amsterdam neighbourhood and hotel guide explains the main areas.

Day 1

Get your bearings along the canals

Walk through the Amsterdam canal belt and the Jordaan, stopping for lunch rather than following a long checklist. A canal cruise is an alternative if you would rather sit down after travelling.

Spend the evening near your hotel. You can explore another neighbourhood tomorrow.

No intercity travel today. Leave room for check-in and getting around the city.

Day 2

Choose a museum, then a neighbourhood

Give the Rijksmuseum or Van Gogh Museum a proper visit rather than rushing through both. Book your preferred time slot, then spend the afternoon around the Museum Quarter or De Pijp.

If museums are not your priority, cross the IJ to Amsterdam Noord. See our Amsterdam sights guide to build the day around your interests.

Reserve the attraction first; fit the rest of the day around that time.

Day 3

Haarlem without the hurry

Take the train to Haarlem and walk towards the Grote Markt. Add a museum, a canal-side walk or time in the smaller shopping streets. You do not need a guided excursion to make this day work.

Return to Amsterdam if you are continuing the longer route. If you leave the Netherlands today, plan the airport journey separately and keep the morning flexible.

Amsterdam Centraal to Haarlem: allow about 15–20 minutes on the train, plus the walk into town.

5-day Netherlands itinerary: add Rotterdam and Delft

Follow days 1–3 above, sleeping in Amsterdam for three nights. Move to Rotterdam on day four and stay one night there. Delft is close enough for the final day without another hotel move.

Continue your trip with a stay in Rotterdam

Canal houses give way to a very different skyline. Rotterdam also puts Delft and The Hague within a short train journey, which becomes useful if you extend the trip to seven days.

Check the walking or tram connection from your hotel to Rotterdam Centraal. City-wide hotel results are not limited to properties beside the station.

Day 4

Rotterdam: architecture and the waterfront

Travel after breakfast and arrange to leave your bags with your accommodation if your room is not ready. Explore the Markthal and Cube Houses, then walk towards the river and Erasmus Bridge.

For the afternoon, choose between an architecture walk and a museum. Our Rotterdam sightseeing guide helps you narrow it down.

Amsterdam Centraal to Rotterdam Centraal: budget roughly 65–80 minutes by train. Services from Amsterdam Zuid differ; check the departure station and any supplement.

Day 5

Delft’s canals and blue-and-white pottery

Delft is compact enough for a day on foot. Start around the Markt and canals, then choose a church visit or a Delftware experience. Check the location before booking: not every pottery attraction is beside the square.

Museum Prinsenhof is closed for renovation, so do not build the day around an indoor visit there. Return to Rotterdam for your luggage or stay another night if you are continuing.

Rotterdam Centraal to Delft: roughly 12–20 minutes by train. Allow extra time if engineering works change the service.

7-day Netherlands itinerary: add The Hague and Utrecht

Keep days 1–5 and extend your Rotterdam stay to three nights. The Hague works as a day trip; Utrecht is your final stop. Add another night if you do not want sightseeing and onward travel on the same day.

The week at a glance

  1. Amsterdam canals
  2. Amsterdam museums or Noord
  3. Haarlem
  4. Move to Rotterdam
  5. Delft, returning to Rotterdam
  6. The Hague, returning to Rotterdam
  7. Utrecht and onward travel

For a slower week, skip Utrecht and spend the last day in Rotterdam. There is no need to add another city just because it fits on the map.

Day 6

The Hague, with an optional trip to the coast

Start with the Mauritshuis or a walk around the Hofvijver. The Binnenhof is under renovation and is not open for a normal walk-through visit.

If the weather suits, continue by tram towards Scheveningen for the beach. Otherwise, stay in the city and choose another stop from our The Hague guide.

Rotterdam to The Hague: allow roughly 25–35 minutes by train, depending on the station and service. The beach requires an additional local journey.

Day 7

Finish beside Utrecht’s canals

Travel to Utrecht and explore the Oudegracht and streets around the Dom. Leave time for lunch at canal level rather than adding another long excursion.

Check luggage storage before leaving Rotterdam if you intend to continue directly from Utrecht. For an early flight, move this visit earlier or leave it out.

Rotterdam Centraal to Utrecht Centraal: approximately 40–45 minutes by train. Your onward journey needs its own time allowance.

Make the route fit your trip

Spring, coast or windmills?

In spring, replace Haarlem or a museum day with a tulip-season outing. For windmills, use our Amsterdam day-trip guide to compare Zaanse Schans with the city options. Swap a day; do not add a second full itinerary to it.

Tickets and daily spending

Buy timed museum tickets before fixing the rest of that day. For trains, compare individual journeys with any pass you are considering. Our train travel guide explains payment and supplements; the travel budget guide covers the other costs.

Train times are rounded station-to-station estimates, not a live timetable. Check the NS journey planner for your date, particularly at weekends.

Book the parts that need a time slot

Choose one or two activities around the route, rather than filling every day with bookings.

Questions before you go

Is three days enough for the Netherlands?

Three full days work for Amsterdam and one nearby town. They are not enough to cover the whole country. Choose the five- or seven-day route if you want a second base.

Do I need a rental car for these itineraries?

No. These routes use cities with railway stations. Walking and local public transport cover the sightseeing. A car adds parking and does not remove the need to walk around historic centres.

How many hotel nights should I book?

The three-day plan uses two nights in Amsterdam. For five days, book three nights in Amsterdam and one in Rotterdam. For seven days, book three nights in each. Add a night before or after if your flight times do not leave a full sightseeing day.

Can I stay in Amsterdam for the whole week?

Yes, but the southern visits involve more return travel. Rotterdam is a useful second base for Delft and The Hague. Compare the extra journeys with the inconvenience of changing hotels.

Can I include tulips or a beach day?

Yes. Replace a day rather than adding another stop. Tulip visits depend on the season and flowering conditions. For a coastal alternative, consider Scheveningen during the Hague day.

Are the suggested train times guaranteed?

No. These are rounded estimates of travel times between stations. Track maintenance, your departure station and the connection you choose can affect the journey time. Allow time to reach the station and check the NS journey planner before departure.

Prefer to stay in one hotel and take day trips?

Stay in Amsterdam and choose nearby trips by travel time, interests and how much of the day you want to spend on the move.
